Food and Mood: The Truth Behind "Hangry"

Hangry is a blend of hungry and angry and means bad-tempered or irritable due to hunger. This is the most obvious example of the effect of diet on mood, but it is not the only one.

This course will provide information on nutrients needed for a healthy nervous system and the importance of balance and timing of meals. Coaching skills will also be discussed so you can facilitate change for your participants to improve their mental health.

  • Develop coaching skills to help participants obtain balanced nutritional plans for optimal mental health

Weight Stigma & Bias: What is a healthy view on weight?

Build an empathetic relationship with participants and help participants develop an empathetic relationship with themselves and their weight.

Improved mental health and awareness leads to better health outcomes – a healthy mind leads to a healthy body

  • Help your participants understand:
  • Weight loss is only one part of the “health” equation.
  • Weight stigma – what is it and how does it impact them?
  • Body acceptance and the concept of set-point theory – not everyone is meant to be a size 4, and that is okay
  • Size does not determine your worth or health
  • Food should not have moral values attached to it – there are no “good” or “bad” foods

Mindfulness: Practical ways to implement mindfulness into the DPP curriculum

In this seminar, you will learn how mindfulness practices can support lifestyle change and better manage stress. Learn the power of being in the present moment. You will learn practical ways to implement mindfulness into the DPP curriculum. This seminar will not only introduce the theory of mindfulness but will be experiential. Mindfulness scripts and audio practices will be provided.

  • Introduce three mindfulness practices: Grounding, Body Scan, and S.T.O.P. (Stop, Take a Breath, Observe, and Proceed)
  • Learn mindfulness practices to help you step out of automatic pilot and back into the present moment.
  • Learn essential mindfulness skills to increase self-awareness and help manage anxiety.

Obesity: It's More Than Just Willpower

Although many people believe that body weight is mostly influenced by personal eating and exercise choices, current research supports a much more complex relationship. In this course we will learn that obesity is multifactorial and we will be looking into many of the factors. It also will discuss the internal factors like hormones and genetics but also the external factors like environment and childhood trauma.

  • Learn the Influence of hormones & aging on weight & appetite
  • Identify the variety of factors that influence weight
    • Genetics, Childhood Trauma, Environmental causes, Microbiome, & Food Addiction
  • Understand why weight loss stalls

Mindful Eating

Strategies to empower participants to connect with the act of eating.

In this session, you will learn and implement awareness and understand hunger signals. Some key components you will take away are: how fast we eat, connection to food, distraction, external, and emotional factors.

  • Have a better understanding of how to cope with emotional eating and binge-eating
